Spoonie Life: The Story Behind Our New Graphic
At Sandstone Drift, every design starts with a story- one rooted in lived experience. Our newest illustration, Spoonie Life, is no exception. This graphic is inspired by the Spoon Theory. It’s a metaphor created by Christine Miserandino to describe what it feels like to live with limited energy, especially for people with chronic illness. Each day starts with a handful of “spoons”- units of energy you spend on everyday tasks like getting out of bed, showering, getting dressed, cooking, and eating. Once your spoons are gone, so is your energy, and pushing past that point often comes with a personal cost.
We wanted to capture this reality in a way that felt both empathetic and empowering. That’s how the Spoonie Life illustration was born.
The Process of Creation
The design went through many sketches and refinements. From hand-drawn outlines to vintage-inspired colors, we leaned into a retro cookware aesthetic– the same mid-century charm you’d see in cheerful enamel ads from the 1950s. But instead of pots and kettles, our stars are five silver spoons, each representing a part of the day:
- Waking up– the spoon yawns, already spending precious energy just starting the day.
- Showering– another spoon spent. Not to mention the tasks of drying off and applying lotion and/or sunscreen that come with a shower.
- Getting dressed– even this takes effort.
- Cooking– this spoon fries an egg, but the strain shows in their expression.
- Eating & resting– finally, the spoon slumps into a chair, exhausted but making space for nourishment.
Together, it tells the quiet but powerful story of what it means to navigate daily life as a Spoonie.
The Spoonie Life Collection
We’re excited to use this illustration across our shop- from prints to apparel and beyond. Every time someone wears or shares it, they help spread awareness and remind others that chronic illness is about managing, surviving, and occasionally thriving in a world that often doesn’t see the weight we carry.
Spoonie Life Sweatshirt
Cozy and soft, with an oversized-long sleeved fit, this crew-neck sweatshirt features our original Spoonie Life graphic. Printed on a garment-dyed butter yellow fabric that’s as soothing as it is stylish. This piece offers warmth, comfort, and visibility- perfect for flare-up days, casual wear, or just letting the world know: this is what strength really looks like.
Spoonie Life Tee
We chose the Softstyle tee for its lightweight, ultra-soft feel because comfort matters, especially on tough days. The natural color brings a gentle, vintage vibe that complements the cozy, retro charm of our Spoonie Life graphic. Cute, relatable, and low-key enough for everyday wear.
Spoonie Life Tote Bag
Sturdy and practical tote bag featuring the Spoonie Life graphic. A visual story of daily life with chronic illness, for your daily errands. Carry it with pride (and medical documents, water bottle, books, sunscreen, etc).
Why It Matters
This graphic isn’t just cute or clever- it’s a visual reminder of resilience. It reflects the invisible choices so many of us make every day: how to budget our energy, how to prioritize, how to accept that some days look different than others, and hopefully it is a reminder that your efforts throughout the day are good enough for now.
For those outside the chronic illness community, it’s a conversation starter- a way to make the invisible visible.
